Wilderness Mind: Dissolving Duality Angels Gate Cultural Center
Wilderness Mind:  Dissolving Duality includes the work of fourteen artists from the Southern California Women’s Caucus for Art’s Eco-art group.  Opening reception May 20th 12 – 5pm

Angels Gate Cultural Center launches a year-long exploration of the concept of wilderness with WILDERNESS MIND: DISSOLVING DUALITY, a compelling exhibition that features works by the fourteen artist members of the Eco-art Collective, a member-led group of the Southern California Women's Caucus for Art.

As curator and collective member Deborah Thomas so aptly states: "Although 'wilderness' may call to mind places of intense experience in nature, far from civilization, it reveals itself to be more a state of mind that defies location, either geographical or imaginary, where social structure relaxes, logic slips away, and time and space collapse." Artists in the exhibition discover natural wonder in many places of the ecosystems that humans inevitably impact from bergy bits (fragments of icebergs) in Antarctic waters to carcasses of dead birds found on urban streets.

The thirty works in the exhibition range from photography to painting, assemblage and installation, to video and performance. Related programs will include a special Summer Solstice Celebration on June 24th and a panel on exploration on July 22nd.

PARTICIPATING ARTISTS: Carolyn Applegate, Ulla Barr, Marie Cenkner, Danielle Eubank, Ann Isolde, J. J. L'Heureux, Nancy Lissaman, Meg Madison, Hiroko Momeii, MaryLinda Moss, Sandra Mueller, Annemarie Rawlinson, Deborah Thomas and France White.

The exhibit will open on Sunday, May 20, 2012 during the annual Open Studio Tour at Angels Gate.

Phoenicia Ship Expedition Phoenicia Ship Expedition

Phoenicia is currently sailing from Sardinia to London and is set to arrive in May, 2012 with Danielle Eubank onboard.

Former British Royal Navy Officer Philip Beale conceived of Phoenicia’s expedition and captains the ship. The original expedition, a circumnavigation of Africa, started in Syria in August 2008, continued through the Suez Canal, around the Cape of Good Hope, through the Straits of Gibraltar, and ended in Syria in October 2010. In all, the ship sailed 20,000 miles and was at sea for more than a year.

Phoenicia will be spending this summer at the prestigious Saint Katharine Docks in London. Phoenicia will be open to the public with an exhibition, The Phoenicians: The Greatest Ancient Sailors. From June 2nd, Phoenicia will be transformed into a floating museum featuring ancient artifacts from the Phoenician era. Book your tickets.

phoenicia expedition
Danielle is an expedition artist for Phoenicia, a re-creation of a 6th century BCE Phoenician sailing vessel. It departed from Arwad, Syria in August 2008, traveled through the Suez Canal, around the Horn of Africa, down the east coast, up the west coast of Africa, through the Straights of Gibraltar and finally sailed across the Mediterranean to return to Syria. In all Phoenicia traveled 20,000 miles and was over 2 years at sea. The circumnavigation of Africa may be followed by another voyage to bring the ship to the United Kingdom in 2013. Expedition to Bali borobudur ship expedition
Five patrons sent Danielle to Bali, Indonesia to create a series of over 20 paintings... In 2004 Danielle was invited to participate in the international Borobudur Ship Expedition. As Expedition Artist, she traveled 10,000 miles with the replica 8th century Indonesian wooden boat from Indonesia to Seychelles, Madagascar, South Africa, and Ghana, painting and drawing. The boat was of a design based on stone relief carvings found on the ancient Buddhist temple at Borobudur on the island of Java. The unique body of work she produced during this epic voyage (over 100 paintings and photographs) was subsequently presented at a solo exhibition held at Thompson’s Gallery in central London.

Danielle makes every effort to create her artwork in an environmentally responsible manner. She uses the highest quality materials. This includes low VOC or no VOC paints, thinners, and mediums, and FSC certified wood for stretchers. She recycles whenever possible.
